Kirill Kaprizov’s Future with the Minnesota Wild in Question After Rejecting Historic Contract Offer

Is Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill kaprizov considering a future away from the team? The question arises after reports that the forward turned down what would have been the largest contract in NHL history: an eight-year extension worth $128 million [[3]].
The news was initially reported by Frank seravalli on Wednesday, with Michael Russo and Joe Smith of The athletic also confirming the information.
Just last week, Wild owner Craig Leipold suggested that an agreement was close and that “Kaprizov would sign the biggest contract in history.” Though, the Russian winger reportedly declined the offer [[3]].
Record-Breaking Numbers on the Table

The proposed contract’s annual average value (AAV) of $16 million would have surpassed Leon Draisaitl‘s $14 million, making it the highest in the league. The total value of $128 million would have also exceeded Alexander Ovechkin‘s 13-year, $124 million deal signed in 2008.
As of July 1st, Kaprizov is eligible to sign an eight-year extension with the Wild. If he waits until after July 1, 2026, the 28-year-old will be limited to a seven-year contract and could explore opportunities with other teams [[3]].
Despite being limited to 41 games last season, Kaprizov still managed to finish second in goals (25) and third in points (56) for the Wild.
Kaprizov was drafted by the Wild in the fifth round (135th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.He began his North American career in the 2020-21 season and later won the Calder Memorial Trophy.
To date, the star has recorded 386 points in 315 NHL games and has led the Wild in scoring for four seasons.
