High-Ranking Officials Plot to Overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa
By Munacho Gwamanda
A shadowy group of influential security officials and war veterans is reportedly organizing an effort to prevent President Emmerson Mnangagwa from extending his time in office. This group, known for its resistance, includes loyalists of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
Mnangagwa’s ambitious #ED2030 agenda, a plan to extend his rule beyond the current term, has encountered internal opposition from military-backed factions. These faction leaders are reportedly growing increasingly restless and defiant over Mnangagwa’s consolidation of power.
The junta convened a secret meeting this week at a farm in Mashonaland Central, a region historically linked to anti-Mnangagwa activities. According to a confidential source close to the gathering, “You must listen carefully to credible war veterans like Blessing Geza; they have a profound message to convey. The junta’s patience with Mnangagwa is wearing thin.”
Mashonaland Central has been a site of significant political upheaval, including a notorious coup in 2017. This coup saw Mnangagwa rise to power after former President Robert Mugabe’s ouster. Those events included secret meetings held by key figures like Perrence Shiri and Paradzai Zimondi. Notably, both men died under suspicious circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic, fueling speculation of official involvement.
While Mnangagwa has made efforts to diminish Chiwenga’s standing, reports suggest that portions of the military remain supportive of the vice president. This allegiance could potentially lead to a military intervention if Mnangagwa attempts further alienation of Chiwenga and his allies.
The political landscape in Zimbabwe, however, has shifted since 2017. Mnangagwa has strengthened his control over intelligence agencies and dismissed several military leaders associated with Chiwenga. However, the nation’s history of unpredictable politics means the possibility of another military intervention cannot be entirely dismissed.
The rift between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga has deepened since the 2017 coup, as Mnangagwa consolidates power across state institutions and party structures. Chiwenga, who was pivotal in Mnangagwa’s rise, has seen his influence decline.
The Ongoing Battle for Power in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe’s political climate remains tense and fluid, characterized by a series of power struggles and alliances within the military and political circles. Mnangagwa’s tenure is far from secure, as evidenced by the resistance from loyalists of Chiwenga.
The junta’s attempts to demarcate their opposition signals a more considerable challenge to Mnangagwa’s administration. The outcomes of their efforts are uncertain, yet the conflict promises to reshape Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
With Mnangagwa’s push for the #ED2030 agenda, the stakes are even higher. His consolidation of power faces obstacles not only from military factions but also from vocal elements within his party. The ongoing power struggles highlight the complex dynamics at play in Zimbabwe’s political sphere.
The Potential Consequences of Political Turmoil
The risks associated with internal political conflict are significant. A military intervention could lead to instability, economic disruption, and social unrest, impacting the lives of Zimbabweans. Moreover, another coup could undermine the progress made in recent years, including economic recovery and steady governance.
Meanwhile, Mnangagwa faces a delicate balance, aiming to solidify his rule while managing internal dissent. Any misstep could potentially trigger a cascade of events that challenge his leadership. The upcoming period will be crucial in determining the direction Zimbabwe will take.
