Julian Benson’s Tranquility House: A Haven for Cystic Fibrosis Families
Life for young cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and their families can be incredibly challenging, especially when they are separated during long hospital stays. Julian Benson, a renowned choreographer and television personality, decided to change this reality. Diagnosed with CF at the tender age of two, with doctors only giving him until 12, Julian has spent much of his life in hospitals. He saw firsthand the struggles and the emotional toll it takes on families.
The Journey Begins
In 2018, Julian founded the Julian Benson Foundation with a mission to make a difference in the lives of CF patients and their families. His idea was to create a “home with a hug,” a sanctuary where families could stay together seamlessly. Inspiration came in the shape of a Victorian redbrick house in Rathgar, south Dublin, which they bought in 2022. The ambitious project aimed to transform this building into four self-contained pods, accommodating families of CF patients.
The Emotional Impact
During the transformation, Julian shared touching moments with architect Dermot Bannon and quantity surveyor Patricia Power on the RTÉ One series Room to Improve. His resolve was unwavering, and despite the emotional toll, the tears he shed were of happiness. Julian dedicated the project to his late mother, whom he believes would be proud of his efforts.
A Community Effort
The renovation of Tranquillity House was a mammoth task requiring €1.6m, with costs rising to €2m as the project progressed. Julian’s appeal to the community garnered overwhelming support. Volunteers and companies donated resources, skills, and time, with sparkling generosity. County Cork builder Brandon Duarte oversaw the teams of construction experts, while Louise Doogan, CEO of the Julian Benson Foundation, managed over 120 companies involved.
Witnessing the Difference
Meet Lar Brennan and his Wexford family, along with Brenda and Roisin McHale from Mayo. Each of their poignant stories highlights the power of family bonds and the struggles of being separated during long hospital stays. The McHale family lost their son and brother, James, to CF in 2012, adding a personal touch to their appreciation for Tranquillity House.
A Vision Turned Reality
Tranquillity House is set to be a game-changer for the CF community in Ireland, with Ireland having the highest rate of CF per capita globally, around 1400 adults and children living with the condition. The fully restored period house, featuring apartments and an office, stands as a testament to the human spirit and the power of community in overcoming adversity.
Before and After

Final Thoughts
Tranquillity House is not just a building; it is a symbol of hope, understanding, and strength. It serves as a beacon for families torn apart by the demands of hospital life, offering them a place to stay together and cherish precious moments. Julian Benson’s transformative act of kindness and the community’s involvement remind us of the power of unity and compassion.
