Starting this week, commuters in Dublin and its surrounding counties will experience changes to bus fares as a new zonal system comes into effect. The Transport For Ireland (TFI) initiative aims to create a more equitable and consistent fare structure across bus and rail services.

The new system divides the Dublin commuter area into four zones, extending approximately 50km from Dublin city center. While some fares will decrease, others will increase, and some will remain the same. New daily, weekly, and monthly ticket options are available for Leap card users, offering capped fares within each zone.

Key Changes to Dublin bus Fares

the “TFI 90-minute fare” remains at €2 for adults, €1 for young adults/students, and €0.65 for children with leap cards within zone 1 (a 23km radius of central Dublin). However, for Dublin commuter bus services not eligible for the 90-minute fare, zone 1 travel will cost €2.40 for adults and €1.20 for young adults, students, and children using Leap cards. The National Transport Authority (NTA) emphasizes that Leap card payments offer the best value for commuters.

“Fares to be determined on a more equitable and easy-to-understand basis”

Daily and weekly fare caps are also in place for zone 1. The daily cap is €6 for adults, €3 for young adults/students, and €1.95 for children. The weekly cap is €24 for adults, €12 for young adults/students, and €7.80 for children.

Impact on Commuter Towns

The new fares affect various commuter towns differently. For example, the single Leap fare from Newtownmountkennedy to Dublin increases from €2.80 to €3.70, while the adult fare from Wicklow Town to Dublin decreases from €6.16 to €5.30. Similarly, Leap customers traveling from Edenderry to Dublin city centre will see an increase from €7.35 to €8.10.

conversely, the single Leap fare from Ashbourne to Dublin decreases from €3.36 to €2.40, and the fare from Ratoath drops from €3.64 to €2.40. Customers from Trim will also see their fare reduce from €7.35 to €5.30.

Notably, fares on bus services operating in Kildare as part of the Dublin city bus network to Leixlip, Celbridge, and Maynooth will not change.
