E-commerce holding company Joom has recently inaugurated its new offices in Lisbon, Portugal, signaling a strategic move to bolster its national and international expansion plans. The company’s new location on Rua Alexandre Herculano places it in the vicinity of WeWork, occupying a ample 2,023 m2 space spread across two floors. The facility includes work areas, meeting rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen with a barista, and an auditorium.

Joom, which operates an online marketplace connecting merchants with consumers, intends to concentrate on technological advancements from its Portuguese base, where it relocated its headquarters in 2023. According to the founder and CEO, the choice of location was driven by the desire to create an appealing environment for its workforce.

Portugal: A Hub for Global Trade Innovation

“Global trade is the world’s largest industry. We wont to make it more technological. I believe that Portugal’s history of over 500 years in world trade, with the Discoveries, is still present. After the caravels, navigators, maps and astrolabes… Now qualified navigators are the talent. We chose Portugal for talent. These factors still play a role,” Ilya Shirokov told reporters, highlighting the country’s rich history in global commerce and its current talent pool as key factors in the decision.

“We needed a place where people wanted to go,”

Currently, Joom employs 400 individuals, with 160 based in Portugal. The company plans to expand its Portuguese workforce by an additional 50 employees by the end of the year.

Future Growth

The expansion in Lisbon underscores Joom’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance global trade and solidifies Portugal’s position as a strategic hub for the company’s future growth.
