The US justice department has agreed to pay $138.7m (£110m) to survivors of former US national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.
In a lawsuit filed in 2022, some of Nassar’s victims claimed that the FBI mishandled credible reports of sexual assaults and did not take them seriously.
The 139 individuals involved in the lawsuit included US Olympic gymnastics champions Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney.
Nassar is currently serving a prison sentence of up to 175 years for sexual assault.
In 2021, the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General, responsible for overseeing the FBI, determined that the agency ignored allegations against Nassar and made numerous mistakes.
The FBI’s investigation into Nassar began in 2015, but the inspector general identified flaws in the process, including a failure to properly document meetings with USA Gymnastics officials after their internal investigation into Nassar’s misconduct.
Nassar continued to treat patients for over a year after initial reports were made to the FBI.
