Diploma dispute: Jokowi Responds to Authenticity Concerns
Former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, has officially submitted his academic credentials to the Criminal Examination Police in response to public complaints questioning thier validity. The Ulama and Activist Defenders Team (TPUA) had filed a formal complaint, prompting the investigation.
Details of the Submission
The submitted documents include diplomas from SMAN 6 Solo (high school) and the Faculty of Forestry at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). These were delivered by Wahyudi Andrianto, Jokowi’s brother-in-law, and Police Commissioner Syarif Muhammad Fitriansyah.
“Today we have handed everything to the Criminal Investigation Unit to be followed up, for a forensic laboratory test,”
Yakup Hasibuan, Jokowi’s attorney
forensic Analysis and Transparency
Jokowi’s legal representative, Yakup Hasibuan, stated that the submitted documents would undergo forensic laboratory testing. However, the timeline for the results remains uncertain. The decision to publicly disclose the findings rests with the investigators.
Hasibuan emphasized that simply displaying the diplomas might not resolve the underlying issues, given previous confirmations from UGM and Jokowi’s associates. The legal team prefers to allow the legal process to unfold.
“Whether this investigator will conclude that he will show or the results of the forensic, we all leave it all to the investigator,”
Yakup Hasibuan, Jokowi’s attorney
While immediate public display is not planned, Hasibuan indicated a willingness to present the diplomas during a trial if deemed necessary to support their case against the fake degree
allegations.
Ongoing Investigation Details
The investigation stems from a public complaint filed by the TPUA and is further supported by information report number LI/39/IV/Res.1.24./2025/Dittipidum, dated April 9, 2025, concerning complaints from Eggi Sudjana.
Brigadier General Djuhandhani Rahardjo puro of the Criminal Investigation Police (Dirtipidum Bareskrim Polri) reported that investigators have questioned 31 witnesses, including complainants, university officials, and Jokowi’s former classmates from high school and university.
As of May 8, 2025, the investigation was reportedly 90% complete, with the remaining 10% contingent on the forensic analysis of the documents. A discrepancy in the lab results could possibly invalidate the progress made thus far.
“The percentage of our investigation process is 90 percent, which is 10 percent is lab test. If the lab test is not identical, then 90 percent fall,”
Brigadier General Djuhandhani Rahardjo Puro
