Jet de Nijs: No Way Back VIPS Childcare Concerns

by Archynetys Economy Desk

“I always set the bar high, otherwise I would have sent Rob to a hospice long ago”

For the steep slopes that the participants have to descend, Jet is paired with Manuel Broekman. She is happy with that. Together they must overcome the dangerous route, but it is not easy for Jet. Instructor John Sohilait checks with Jet if she is ready for the challenge. “Are you looking forward to it, Jet?” he asks. She responds: “Yes, I’m looking forward to it, but I’m also dreading it, because there are a lot of loose stones on the route.”

In the episode, Jet looks back on her late husband, Rob de Nijs. “I really took care of 24 hours for five years.” Caring for her husband had a great influence on her life: she was unable to exercise much because of the care she provided. “Parkinson’s is a progressive disease of the brain and that meant that he could no longer do many things independently.”

Jet continues: “I always set the bar high, otherwise I would have sent Rob to a hospice long ago.” She then decides to descend with Manuel, despite the fear and uncertainty. She has to keep her balance, hold a rope and take long steps over the slippery stones. The swirling water beneath her makes the situation frightening. “If you experience fear, then you are only concerned with one thing. That fear has to go and I have to get away from this place.”

She shares her inner struggle: “I notice that with every step I am actually afraid of falling. I am afraid of breaking something. I am also afraid that something will happen to me and that my child will be left alone. He only has one parent.” This realization weighs heavily on her, but her determination to persevere is greater.

After a long journey, the VIPs finally arrive at their camp. Presenter Jan Versteegh unexpectedly wakes them from their sleep after a short night. He has a proposal: two VIPs should abandon their journey and stay behind at a new camp. Jet raises her hand with four others. The question remains whether she will ultimately be allowed to stay at the new camp.

Ammar Bozoglu has now left the program behind him. How does he look back on the adventure? You can see that below.

No Way Back VIPS see you every Thursday at 8:30 PM on SBS 6.
