Jessica Simpson Reflects on Her Separation from Eric Johnson and Future of Love

In the interview, Simpson reflected on the recording process of her new music, particularly her first single, “Use My Heart Against Me,” set to drop on Friday. This track is the lead-off piece of her upcoming EP, “Nashville Canyon: Part 1,” which hits March 21.

“I’ve grown up so much. I can handle so much,” Simpson told PEOPLE. “Maybe I’m just meant to love a lot of people in my life.” Her sentiments highlight the resilience and emotional depth she possesses as a public figure.

The mother of three added, “I don’t know why my heart gets tossed around but I’m one of the lucky ones,” emphasizing the indomitable spirit she carries despite her challenges.

“At least I have my children and I still have Eric. He’s still very much a part of my life and will always be,” Simpson expressed, underlining her priority for family and maintaining a positive relationship with her estranged husband.

Simpson’s resilience and focus on her career and family are evident in her new project. The EP, “Nashville Canyon: Part 1,” showcases her musicianship and personal growth, recorded at a rental home in Franklin, Tennessee, near Nashville.

“Discovering this music is something I did on my own,” Simpson explained. “Thank God I had Nashville; it was just a way of me owning myself and declaring it,” she said, expressing her independence and ownership of her artistry.

Last month, Simpson and Johnson officially announced their separation after a 10-year marriage. The two, married since July 2014, have remained amicable yet distant in recent months.

Speaking about the reasons behind the split, Simpson described it as a “painful situation” within their marriage. Her phrasing suggests a complex and emotional journey.

Simpson did not elaborate further on the specific issues that led to their separation, maintaining a level of privacy that has become increasingly important for her family.

“Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them,” Simpson added. “We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.” Her priority for the children’s well-being is a testament to her dedication as a mother.

Jessica and Eric share three children together: daughters Maxwell Drew, 12, and Birdie Mae, 5, and son Ace Knute, 11. Their relationship with their children remains strong despite the separation.

Previously, Simpson has been seen without her wedding ring in her social media posts. Johnson was also spotted without his ring in November, indicating a gradual transition toward separation.

Johnson’s public appearances have been limited. His most recent sighting was in a group family photograph for Easter 2024. Before that, he hadn’t been seen on Simpson’s social media since his birthday in September 2023.
