Jesse Eisenberg Prefers to Watch ‘Modern Family‘ Without Himself
The actor requested his scenes be removed from an episode he guest-starred in, according to jesse Tyler Ferguson.
Jesse Eisenberg, known for his roles in films like “The Social Network” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” apparently has a unique approach to watching himself on screen.
On a recent episode of the “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, Jesse Tyler Ferguson shared an anecdote about Eisenberg’s guest appearance on “Modern Family.” “He did an episode of Modern Family as he was a fan of the show,” FERGUSON said. “He’s like, I really wanna watch this episode, but will you cut out my scenes? So we sent him the episode he was in with his scenes cut out, so he could watch it.”
The topic arose when Alexander Skarsgard, Ferguson’s guest on the podcast, was asked if he ever watched his own performances.
“I’m not like Jesse Eisenberg who doesn’t want to watch,” the Big Little Lies actor responded.
SKARSGARD later recounted working with EISENBERG on the 2018 film The Hummingbird Project.
“I did a movie with Jesse, and I adore him, and it was an unbelievable experience,” SKARSGARD said. “But at the premiere, he would be like, ‘We do the red carpet, walk in, introduce the movie, get the hell out of there, and then come back two hours later.”
The actors noted that when EISENBERG directs and stars in a film, such as A Real Pain, avoiding his own performance becomes more challenging.
Eisenberg’s appearance on “Modern Family” was in the season 5 episode “Under Pressure,” where he played Asher, an environmentalist and neighbor to Mitch (FERGUSON) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet).

EISENBERG has previously discussed his sensitivity to criticism regarding his performances.
“I was in this Batman movie and the Batman movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received,” EISENBERG said on the Armchair Expert podcast in December, referring to his role as lex Luthor in 2016’s Batman v superman: Dawn of Justice. “I’ve never said this before, and it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way because I was poorly received in something so public.”
As then, he has been involved in numerous projects, including writing, directing, and starring in A Real Pain.
