Jesse Eisenberg Distances Himself from Mark Zuckerberg: Concerns Over Meta’s Actions

Jesse Eisenberg, known for his Emmy-nominated portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 film The Social Network, is distancing himself from the Facebook and Meta chief. In a recent appearance on BBC Radio 4’s “Today”, Eisenberg expressed his growing discomfort with Zuckerberg’s leadership and the tech giant’s recent actions.

Eisenberg’s Criticism of Zuckerberg’s Leadership

Eisenberg made his concerns clear during his interview on the BBC program. He confessed that he hadn’t been following Zuckerberg’s “life trajectory, partly because I don’t want to think of myself as associated with somebody like that.” He elaborated, “It’s not like I played a great golfer and now people think I’m a great golfer. It’s more about a guy who is doing things that are problematic—taking away fact-checking and safety concerns, making people who are already threatened in this world more threatened.”

Meta’s ControversialRecent Actions

On January 7, Zuckerberg announced that Meta would be replacing its fact-checking systems on Facebook and Instagram with a “community notes” model, similar to what Elon Musk’s X platform uses. According to Zuckerberg, Meta’s existing fact-checking had resulted in “too many mistakes and too much censorship” and was “too politically biased.” This decision sparked widespread criticism over concerns about misinformation and content moderation.

Following Donald Trump’s winning the 2024 presidential election, Zuckerberg met with him at Mar-a-Lago and contributed $1 million to his inaugural fund alongside other tech giants. Zuckerberg also attended Trump’s inauguration on January 20, further raising questions about his political allegiances and role in amplifying controversial voices.

Eisenberg’s Personal Stance

When addressing Zuckerberg’s recent actions, Eisenberg stated, “I’m concerned just as a person who reads a newspaper. I don’t think about, ‘Oh, I played the guy in the movie and therefore…’ It’s just, I’m a human being and you read these things and these people have billions upon billions of dollars, more money than any human person has ever amassed. And what are they doing with it? Oh, they’re doing it to curry favor with somebody who’s preaching hateful things.”

Eisenberg emphasized that his concerns are not rooted in his acting career but in his personal life. “I hold these beliefs not as a person who played [him] in a movie, but as just somebody who is married to a woman who teaches disability justice in New York, and lives for her students are going to get a little harder this year,” he said.

Current Project and Career

Despite his concerns about Zuckerberg, Eisenberg continues to focus on his career. He is currently up for the best original screenplay Oscar for his new film, A Real Pain, which follows two cousins who travel to Poland to honor their late grandmother. Eisenberg co-stars in the dramedy with Kieran Culkin, who is nominated in the supporting actor category.

Meta’s Response

Meta did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment on Eisenberg’s criticism. While Zuckerberg’s recent decisions have been highly contentious, Meta’s silence speaks to the ongoing challenges and public scrutiny it faces.

Conclusion

Jesse Eisenberg’s distancing from Mark Zuckerberg reflects a broader trend of actors and public figures re-evaluating their associations with influential tech leaders. As Zuckerberg continues to navigate controversial territory, it remains to be seen how these actions will impact not only Meta but also its relationships with artists, activists, and the broader public.
