Jennifer Love Hewitt Reflects on Controversial Comments from ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’
Jennifer Love Hewitt, the actress known for her iconic role in the 1997 thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer, has opened up about the provocative comments she received as a teenager. In an interview with Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, Hewitt shed light on her experiences navigating the adult entertainment world while filming the film at age 16.
The Harsh Realities of Stardom
Hewitt recounted a particularly shocking moment when promoting her debut film, which catapulted her to stardom. She said: “When I Know What You Did Last Summer came out, everybody said, ‘Oh, I know what your breasts did last summer,’” she shared. “There were grown men talking to me at 16 about my breasts openly on a talk show—and people were laughing about it.”
Her comments on the sexist treatment she endured at such a young age highlight the stark differences in societal attitudes towards female sexuality then versus now. “It was a culture that was fully accepted,” Hewitt added. “But when you sit and look at where we are now versus then, it is really mind blowing.”
The Power of Perspective
Reflecting on those early experiences, Hewitt admits she had largely forgotten about the comments until around a decade ago when she revisited some footage. “I didn’t remember that,” she said. “I really didn’t take that part of it in. But in hindsight, it was very strange to become a sex symbol for people before I even knew what that was.”
Being a teenager thrust into the spotlight, Hewitt found herself grappling with complex ideas as a child. “I didn’t know what being ‘sexy’ meant, and I was on the cover of Maxim magazine. People would walk up and be like, ‘Oh, I took your magazine with me on a trip last week,’ and I didn’t really know what that meant. It’s kind of gross.”
The Importance of Supportive Figures
Despite the challenges, Hewitt credits her mother for helping her maintain her innocence and shield her from the excesses that often accompany fame. “At the time, it felt very innocent and exciting and fun,” she said. “So I’m thankful for that, because I think had I tried to take on some of that earlier, I think it would have messed with me a little bit, but it didn’t, for whatever reason.”
Her mother’s role in her early career also emphasized the importance of gratitude and appreciating the opportunities she was given. “I remember thinking it was really cool that the girls looked up to me, and I took that very seriously,” she said. “That was the part that I took away from it at the time. I felt a real responsibility to carry myself in a way that felt like I was earning the right to be somebody’s role model.”
Hewitt also fondly recalls a conversation with her mother who reminded her, “There were probably 50,000 other girls in the world that didn’t get the opportunity that I did, and that I had to take care of it.”
Revisiting the Past
Continuing her journey, Hewitt will once again bring her character back to life in this year’s reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film is set to be released on July 18.
As Hewitt looks ahead to the future while reflecting on her past, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the evolving landscape of female representation and the influence of supportive figures in shaping one’s journey in the entertainment industry.
Her insights not only provide a glimpse into her own experiences but also underscore the importance of protected childhoods and the resilience required to navigate the challenges of stardom.
