Venezuelan human rights activist Javier Tarazona was released this Sunday in Caracas, according to his family, after spending more than four years in detention.

“After 1,675 days, 4 years and 7 months, this long-awaited day arrived, my brother Javier Tarazona is free,” Rafael Tarazona, who also spent a few months in detention, published in X.

The activist directed Fundaredes, an NGO that denounced the presence of guerrillas and paramilitaries in Venezuela. In 2021, Tarazona was charged with terrorism, inciting hatred and treason, charges that he always rejected.

Along with Tarazona, other people were released this Sunday in El Helicoide, headquarters of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin), according to Gonzalo Himiob, vice president of the NGO Foro Penal, which verifies the process in contact with the relatives of detainees.

The president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced on Friday a “general amnesty law” that could benefit hundreds of political prisoners who are still deprived of their freedom in the country, and also the reconversion of the detention center.

Since the Government of Venezuela announced on January 8 that it would release “a significant number” of political prisoners, more than 300 people have been released from prison, according to the registry of civil organizations, a figure that remains far from the more than 800 reported by the authorities since December.
