However, before Japan’s second goal was scored, there was an incident that attracted great attention. In a situation where the hosts were attacking, Tanaka was overshadowed by Francis when he controlled the ball.

Tanaka then threw a hard kick, which unfortunately hit Abu Francis’ calf area. Both players both fell, Francis screamed in pain. It appeared Francis’ right leg was broken, and his screams reportedly echoed around the stadium.

After Abu Francis was stretchered off the field, Tanaka was replaced by Joel Chima Fujita not long after. Tanaka, who defends Leeds United, immediately met Ghana coach Otto Addo on the bench to apologize regarding Francis’ injury.

After the match, Addo appreciated Tanaka’s attitude. “I really appreciate it because the player not only met our players to apologize for what had happened, but also met me as a coach,” he said in 3Sports.

“We should not underestimate this kind of behavior. I think this is a very, very good education here in Japan. And for the players to apologize means a lot, and I told him that I really appreciate it,” Addo added about In Tanaka.
