Japan Seals Crucial Davis Cup Qualifier Victory Over Britain, U.S. Easily Defeats Taiwan

In a nail-biting encounter, Japan fought back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Britain 3-2 in their Davis Cup qualifier match held on Saturday, securing their passage to the second round. Meanwhile, the United States maintained their dominance by clinching a hassle-free 4-0 victory over Taiwan.

Japan’s Comeback Against Britain

The day started with a tie at 1-1 after singles matches on Friday. Britain’s Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski provided a strong front, securing a crucial 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) victory over Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki and Takeru Yuzuki in the doubles, putting Britain within one win of progress.

However, the tide turned in Japan’s favor when Yoshihito Nishioka clawed back the score with a decisive 6-3, 7-6 (0) win against Jacob Fearnley. Kei Nishikori, a former world No. 4, then sealed the victory by outplaying Billy Harris 6-2, 6-3. This win marked Nishikori’s 300th hard-court success.

Reflecting on his performance, Nishikori said, “I had a bad day yesterday. I tried to be more solid and aggressive and stay calm today. Very happy that the team won. This win will give us confidence. Our goal is to get to the main draw [Finals].”

Depth and Quality Praise

Britain’s Davis Cup captain Leon Smith praised Japan’s team depth, highlighting players like Nishioka and Nishikori. “You’ve got Nishioka who’s been top 25; Nishikori has been No. 4 in the ATP rankings. So there’s a lot of quality, and we pushed them hard. We wish Team Japan all the very best for the rest of this year as well,” said Smith.

U.S. Easily Defeats Taiwan

The United States established a 2-0 lead against Taiwan after Friday’s matches in Taipei City. The Americans further consolidated their advantage with a dominant display by Olympic silver medalists Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. They overpowered Ray Ho and Wu Tung-Lin with a convincing 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory in doubles.

Mackenzie McDonald added to the U.S. effort by defeating Huang Tsung-Hao 6-2, 6-3 in singles. The American team, demonstrating their experience and skill, secured an unblemished 4-0 victory without surrendering a single service game.

Krajicek echoed his team’s satisfaction with their performance, stating, “Fortunately we were able to finish the job in the first match. We took care of our serve really well.”

Future Competitions

With their victories, Japan will face tough competition from the Czech Republic in the second round, set for September. The American contingent looks forward to a battle against the victorious Czech side in the same round.

The first round of the Davis Cup involves 26 teams vying for 13 spots in the second round of qualifiers. Last year’s runners-up, the Netherlands, will automatically enter the next stage.

The second round will consist of seven matches, with winners advancing to the prestigious Final 8, alongside Italy, which hosts the tournament in November.
