Young people across Japan marked Coming of Age Day on Monday with a mix of optimism and anxiety, as the population of the country’s younger generation continues to linger near record lows.
According to government data, about 1.09 million people — 560,000 men and 530,000 women — had reached adulthood as of Jan. 1 since a year earlier, the second-lowest on record after crashing to 1.06 million in 2024. The data includes foreign residents living in the country for over three months.
In 1970, this figure peaked at 2.46 million — more than double that seen this year — during the first postwar baby boom. After trending downward it briefly rebounded to 2.07 million in 1994 before beginning a long decline.
