Jane Fonda has minor beef with Barbra Streisand.
The two-time Oscar winner was asked by Entertainment Tonight about the Academy Awards’ “In Memoriam” portion, and she noted “we lost a lot of talented people.”
But something was clearly on her mind when she cut off Denny Directo’s next question to make a light yet pointed observation about Streisand’s tribute to “The Way We Were” co-star Robert Redford.
“I wanna know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford,” Fonda said. “She only made one movie with him. I made four. I have more to say.”
Directo invited her to “say it now.”
“I was always in love with him,” Fonda replied. “The most gorgeous human being and such great values. And he did a lot for movies. He really changed movies, lifted up independent movies.”
Streisand hailed filmmaker and actor Redford, who died in September at age 89, as “thoughtful and bold.”
“I called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail. … I miss him now more than ever,” she said.
She then sang part of “The Way We Were.”
Fonda starred with Redford in “The Chase” (1966), “Barefoot in the Park” (1967), “The Electric Horseman” (1979) and “Our Souls at Night” (2017). They also appeared in 1960’s “Tall Story,” in which she had a starring role and Redford played an uncredited part as a basketball player.
But she’s not a singing legend like Streisand with a classic song that feels almost tailor-made for moments like the Oscars tribute to the deceased.
Streisand also sang “The Way We Were” in 2013 to honor the passing of composer Marvin Hamlisch.
She did her pal Redford justice as well.
