Jane Austen Streaming: Best Adaptations for 250 Years

They died in the 19th century, but they are getting younger every day. The Brontë sisters and Jane Austen They remain key to European novels many decades later and their bibliography has been brought to the big screen with equal success. From Emily Brontë, we have an adaptation of Wuthering Heights with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi and directed by Emerald Fennell (A Promising Young Woman) just around the corner, specifically on February 13, when it hits theaters in Spain.

Jane Austen left us more works than Emily Brontë, despite not dying much later than her (Austen, born in the 18th century, lived at the age of 41; Emily, who came into the world when Jane was dying, did not live past 30). With some frequency, cinema reminds us that Jane Austen existed and takes one of its volumes off the shelf. To celebrate its 250th anniversary, RTVE Play has added to its catalogperhaps, the two best adaptations of Austen: the version of Pride and Prejudice by Joe Wright and the Sense and Sensibility, work of Ang Lee. Both can be seen completely free until January 13.

What are Jane Austen’s masterpieces about?

Both were written in just a few years. Sense and sensitivity reached bookstores in 1811 and Pride and Prejudicein 1813. The cinema respected this chronology, although it was extended: the best adaptations of both, which can be temporarily found in the RTVE Play catalogue, were released 10 years apart.

Sense and Sensibility part of the death of Mr. Dashwood. After his death, his widow and three daughters (Elinor, Marianne and Margaret) are forced to leave the family home, which passes to his stepbrother John. From the estate, they move on to a modest house in Barton. Elinor, prudent and rational, falls in love with Edward Ferrars, for whom this love is a challenge. Marianne, passionate and romantic, falls for the charming John Willoughby, although in this case John does not seem to reciprocate her.

Pride and prejudicefor its part, tells the story of the Bennet family, made up of five unmarried daughters. Mr. Bingley, wealthy, and Mr. Darcy stop by to visit the Bennets and the latter falls in love with Elizabeth, who nevertheless despises him for his arrogance and his reputation as a ladies’ man. Jane, the firstborn, dislikes Bingley less.
