Jamie Hector Hosts Moving Mountains Gala, Celebrates Youth Empowerment

Actor and activist Jamie Hector hosted the 17th Annual Moving Mountains Gala on Wednesday, June 11, in Brooklyn, New York.The event celebrated nearly two decades of the association’s work with youth.
The gala, held at Bridge 26 in DUMBO, commenced with a performance by Moving Mountains members. Dr. A.R. Bernard offered a prayer and announced a $25,000 donation to Moving Mountains.
Current and former Moving Mountains participants shared testimonials about the organization’s impact. Domo, from East Flatbush, said the program steered him away from crime, changing his outlook.
Other participants spoke of becoming college graduates and pursuing careers in acting, photography, and other fields, all with Jamie Hector’s mentorship.
The evening included theatrical performances of scenes from Hamilton, The Greatest Showman, and Textbook Shakespeare.
Educator Geoffrey Canada served as keynote speaker, pledging to match donations.
High school graduate Nasir Augustin stated, “It’s hard to put in words what Moving Mountains meant to me. Gave me a stage to express myself, a place to grow and a family that has supported me every mile of the way.” WNBA Champion Breanna Stewart was honored at the gala, accepting her award with Jamie Hector.
Later, Leoñ presented Malik Yoba with the Dream Builders Award. Malik Yoba said, “Ain’t this lovely? Y’all feel community, y’all feel connection.” He emphasized intentional living, presence, and purpose, adding, “In real time we have to do real work.”
Rapper and actor Busta rhymes spoke about his early years, his gratitude, and his respect for Jamie Hector, Malik Yoba,and Leoñ. He also acknowledged the late Ananda Lewis, stating, “This woman really took on the initiative and responsibility-Ananda Lewis. Rest in peace ’cause she moved mountains too.”
