Jamie Foxx Reveals Shocking Health Scare: ‘If I Don’t Go in His Head, We’re Going to Lose Him’
Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx has bravely opened up about the terrifying medical emergency he experienced in April 2023, details of which were previously kept private. In his new Netflix comedy special, "Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was …," the 56-year-old actor shared emotional insights into the ordeal, including the moment his sister was told he could die.
The ordeal began with what Foxx initially thought was a “bad headache” while filming the forthcoming comedy "Back in Action" alongside Cameron Diaz. He was given a cortisone shot by a doctor and sent home, causing concern for his sister, Deidra Dixon, who insisted on taking him to a different hospital.
A Rushed Operation and a Glimpse into the ‘Tunnel’
At the hospital, doctors discovered Foxx was suffering from a brain bleed that led to a stroke. He was immediately rushed into surgery.
"[Doctors] said if I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him," Foxx recounted his sister being told. Deidra Dixon prayed outside the operating room for his survival.
Foxx also shared his experience of being unconscious during the critical period, describing it as a peaceful journey through a hot, eerie tunnel. He joked about a potential encounter with the devil, adding a touch of humor even in this harrowing moment.
Rediscovering Faith and Embracing Humor
Upon awakening in May, Foxx was confined to a wheelchair with amnesia about the events leading to his hospitalization. Doctors were cautiously optimistic about his recovery, forewarning him that it would likely be the “worst year of his life.”
Despite the challenges, Foxx focused on humor and faith as catalysts for recovery. "If I can stay funny, I can stay alive" became his mantra. The release of his special, alongside a heartfelt message to his fans on social media, have been received with support and admiration.

Foxx’s new Netflix special provides a raw and honest look at his medical journey, highlighting his resilience and unwavering sense of humor.
With "Back in Action" set for release on January 17th, Foxx demonstrates his dedication to his craft and his remarkable recovery.
