James Tolkan, known to moviegoers as Professor Strickland from the Back to the Future trilogy, has died. The actor, who died at the age of ninety-four, worked for fifty-five years in films, series and stage plays, but became known especially in the aforementioned film trilogy and Top Gun.

James Tolkan was born on June 20, 1931 in Calumet, Michigan. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and then moved to New York where he studied acting. He began his career in local theater productions and eventually appeared in nine Broadway plays. In the 1960s, he appeared in television series, where he only worked as a supporting actor, but later appeared as a partner of Al Pacino and Diane Keaton.
