A woman died after being struck by a “planier caterpillar” (beach-grooming vehicle) on Cervia beach, along the Italian Adriatic coast. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, according to reports, when the heavy vehicle reversed and ran over the woman, who was near the water’s edge.

Emergency services pronounced the woman dead at the scene. She was estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old, but her identity has not yet been officially released.

Details of the Incident

The accident took place at approximately 11 a.m. on the Pinarella di Cervia beach in the Ravenna province of the Emilia-Romagna region. Witnesses reported that the event unfolded in front of numerous beachgoers. The driver reportedly stopped the vehicle and called for help after realizing what had happened.

Initial reports suggested the “planier caterpillar” was being used to prepare the beach for the tourist season. However, the local lifeguard cooperative has disputed this, stating on their Facebook page that dune leveling work had been completed weeks prior.

“The planier caterpillar was not on behalf of the cooperative on the beach and it is not clear why the driver was on the beach with a mechanical vehicle,” stated fabio Ceccaroni, President of the Cooperative. He also raised concerns about the use of such a vehicle during a busy weekend, now that the bathing season has begun.

Political Reaction

The President of the Emilia-Romagna region and the tourism city councilor jointly expressed their concern that such a vehicle was in operation on the beach during peak season. They have pledged a full investigation into the incident. The Carabinieri, local police, and port authority are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
