At 98 years old, Lidiia Lomikovska faced a crisis that she deemed worse than the Second World War. When Russian forces descended upon her village of Ocheretyne in eastern Ukraine, she relied on her instincts to guide her next steps.
Separated from her family amidst the chaos, Lidiia embarked on a perilous journey westward, clad only in her slippers. Despite the heavy shelling, she pressed on, using a stick and a plank of wood for support.
A Grueling Trek
“My legs were carrying me somehow; I wasn’t carrying them!” Lidiia recounted. She walked a staggering 10km (6 miles) before being rescued by Ukrainian police. The devastation she witnessed along the way was heart-wrenching.
“There’s nothing left! It’s all upside down!” she lamented as she surveyed the destruction wrought by the advancing Russian troops. Entire buildings reduced to rubble, a once-thriving community now in ruins.
