Israeli Forces Delay Full Withdrawal from Southern Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Dispute

Tensions remain high in southern Lebanon as Israeli forces have delayed their complete withdrawal from the region, sparking a controversy over the terms of a newly negotiated ceasefire.

Israeli Forces and Ceasefire Violations

Despite the end of the withdrawal deadline, which was part of a November ceasefire, Israeli forces decided to maintain positions at five strategic hilltops. Lebanese authorities strongly object to this decision, viewing it as a violation of the agreement.

International Brokered Agreement

The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and France, aimed to conclude a 13-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. It stipulated the removal of both military forces and weapons from southern Lebanon and the subsequent deployment of Lebanese soldiers to the area.

Lebanese Response

Lebanon has alleged that Israel must withdraw entirely from its territory, stating that any continued presence will be considered occupation. This tough stance reflects deep frustration over the limited compliance with the ceasefire terms.

Ongoing Displacement and Damage

Even as Israeli troops withdrew, Lebanese towns and villages faced extensive damage. Lebanon’s army began clearing roadblocks and checking for unexploded ordnance. Displaced residents, many carrying Hezbollah flags and portraits of its leader Hassan Nasrallah, have started returning to their homes.

In the destroyed town of Kfar Kila, residents described the extensive destruction. Safaa Jouma, a 25-year-old resident who lost her brother in the conflict, recounted, “Our house is destroyed just like all the other houses. We couldn’t save anything; the house was levelled.”

Hezbollah’s Role

The Hezbollah-led military campaign against Israel erupted shortly after a series of attacks by Palestinian Hamas gunmen from Gaza. Hezbollah claimed it was supporting the Palestinian cause, though the conflict brought heavy casualties to the region.

Hezbollah suffered significant losses during this conflict, which saw over 3,960 casualties in Lebanon, including many civilians. Displacement affected over one million people, mostly in areas close to Hezbollah’s influence.

Israeli Casualties and Displacement

Israeli authorities reported 80 military personnel and 47 civilians killed, with roughly 60,000 citizens displaced from northern Israel. While most Lebanese displaced persons have returned home, the same cannot be said for those in Israel.

Strategic Points and Security Concerns

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar defended the temporary retention of troops at five strategic high points, asserting that the move was necessary for national security.

“The IDF’s enforcement activities against Hezbollah will continue at full strength,” Saar declared, emphasizing preparedness against similar threats.

Impact on Regional Stability

The ongoing dispute underscores the complexities and challenges in achieving lasting peace in the region. The unresolved conflict between Israel and Hezbollah poses ongoing security risks and hinders the restoration of normal life for many individuals in both countries.

Future Prospects

As Israeli forces remain at the five strategic points, the Lebanese government insists on full withdrawal, viewing any deviation from the ceasefire agreement as a breach of trust.

The international community continues to monitor the situation, emphasizing the need for both sides to adhere strictly to the terms of the ceasefire to foster regional stability and security.

The road ahead for southern Lebanon remains fraught with challenges, but with continued diplomacy and cooperation, there is hope for a sustainable peace.
