Israel and India Head Towards Trade Pact Amidst US Corridor Initiative

Israel and India are on the brink of signing a long-awaited free trade agreement, aiming to strengthen economic relations by the end of this year. This comes as US President Donald Trump reinvigorates efforts to establish a proposed US-India trade corridor that would pass through Israel, fostering extensive economic growth and political cooperation.

Israel’s Economic Minister Nir Barkat Visits India

During a high-profile visit to New Delhi last week, Israel’s Economy Minister Nir Barkat led a significant business delegation consisting of over 100 companies. Barkat emphasized the historic nature of this visit, stating that it marks “a breakthrough in the economic relations between Israel and India.”

“The largest business delegation ever sent from Israel demonstrates our commitment to expanding economic ties, boosting Israeli exports, and opening the Indian market to cutting-edge Israeli technologies,” Barkat commented. “This cooperation will drive economic growth, enhance mutual investments, and create jobs in both nations.”

US President Trump’s Trade Corridor Vision

This diplomatic push comes amid Trump’s ongoing efforts, which began under his predecessor Joe Biden, to establish a rail and shipping corridor connecting India with the Middle East, Europe, and the US. This ambitious project aims to catalyze economic development and deepen political ties among the nations involved.

In a White House meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump announced the plan to build “one of the greatest trade routes in all of history,” which would run from India to Israel, through Italy, and eventually to the US. The corridor would link roads, railways, and undersea cables.

Business Delegation Highlights

The business delegation, which included representatives from sectors like cybersecurity, smart agriculture, renewable energy, digital health, water technologies, AI, and big data, held over 600 meetings during their visit. They engaged with prominent Indian business leaders and participated in significant events such as the India Energy Week.

Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal praised Israel’s technological prowess, noting, “Israel’s capabilities in innovation and security are extraordinary, and we want to bring similar advancements to India. There are immense opportunities for collaboration, leading to significant geopolitical and economic achievements.”

Indian Delegation to Follow

In further demonstration of their commitment to深化 cooperation, Goyal announced that he will lead a large business delegation from India to visit Israel in 2025. This reciprocal visit aims to explore further investment opportunities, deepen technological partnerships, and boost key sectors such as water technologies, cybersecurity, healthcare, and advanced agriculture.

Current Trade Metrics

In 2024, bilateral trade between Israel and India reached a record $5 billion, with $2.5 billion in Israeli exports, including a noteworthy $1 billion in diamond trade and $1.5 billion in imports from India to Israel. Beyond trade in diamonds, Israel stands as the fourth largest military hardware supplier to India, with numerous cooperation agreements in water systems, agriculture, healthcare, and solar energy.
