Flood – Evacuations on the island

Message from the Mayor of Chalonnes-sur-Loire, Friday 02/20/26 at 7:30 a.m.
« Several families on the island have been evacuated, at their request, since the start of the week. Due to the ongoing and worsening flood, I decided to carry out an evacuation today, 02/20/2026, early in the afternoon.
Indeed, while we are now on red alert, the Loire coast could reach 6 meters on Saturday, exceeding the level of the 1995 flood.
A risk of power cuts is also possible this weekend.
After numerous discussions with the Boutons de saule association, the firefighters, the gendarmes and the municipal services, throughout a week that began very tragically, I believe that we must become collectively aware of the seriousness of the flood that we are experiencing in 2026. After so many years of tranquility, our benchmarks are shaken up.
I therefore take this decision with full responsibility, in the interest of the residents, your safety and that of the rescuers, having exhausted all other reasonable means of protection.
To date, given the situation in the department, firefighters will no longer be available as before.
They were instructed to only travel for evacuations. They will therefore no longer do reconnaissance.
I therefore specify that I am organizing, today, Friday, the last evacuation intervention before the weekend.
If you do not wish to be evacuated, you must contact the Chalonnes-sur-Loire town hall before 10 a.m. today at the following numbers:

- 06 01 53 81 90
If you do not call before 10 a.m., the firefighters will come to your home to evacuate you.
Please prepare your personal belongings now and make all necessary arrangements.
A reception center is organized at the Saint-Exupéry complex with 4 civil security agents, and the mobilization of all municipal services.
If you do not have alternative accommodation with family or friends, accommodation will be offered to you.
The firefighters informed us this morning that it will be possible to evacuate the animals (cows, horses, etc.).
We thank you in advance for your cooperation and your sense of responsibility in the face of this exceptionally serious situation. »

Evacuation of animals from the island
Pets (cats, dogs, chickens, etc.): possibility of evacuation with their owners.
In consultation with farmers, the herds which have been brought to safety on the island are not affected by the evacuation.
The order prohibiting boat traffic on the Loire and on the island of Chalonnes is still in force.
The Town Hall issues authorizations in limited numbers to the inhabitants of the island through the “Crue” referents of the Boutons de Saule association.
