Iserlohn Playgrounds Embrace inclusive Communication wiht Innovative Boards

breaking Down Barriers: Communication Boards Foster Inclusion on playgrounds

In a move towards greater inclusivity, the city of Iserlohn has introduced communication boards at two of its children’s playgrounds: Foxglasmühle in Letmathe and Fritz-Kühn-Platz in Südstadt. These boards, featuring 66 MetaCom symbols, are designed to facilitate communication for children who are non-speaking or have limited German language skills. The initiative aims to create a welcoming and accessible environment for all children, regardless of their abilities.

The goal is simple: to empower all children and adults to interact, play together, resolve conflicts, and express their needs and desires. By providing a low-threshold communication tool, Iserlohn is actively promoting the participation of all individuals in public life.

MetaCom Symbols: A Universal Language for Play

MetaCom symbols are already widely used in kindergartens and schools, making them a familiar tool for many children. The introduction of these symbols on playgrounds allows all children to become acquainted with them, fostering communication with those who may not speak or share the same language. Moreover, these boards serve to raise awareness and sensitivity towards individuals with communication impairments.

According to a recent study by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 1 in 12 U.S. children aged 3-17 has had a disorder related to voice, speech, language, or swallowing.Initiatives like the communication boards in Iserlohn can play a crucial role in bridging communication gaps and fostering a more inclusive society.

Angelman Association: A Catalyst for Change

The initial two communication boards where made possible through the generous funding of the Angelman Association and installed by the city of Iserlohn in early march. Jennifer Jung,a member of the association and mother to a child with Angelman syndrome, spearheaded the sponsorship. Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder affecting the 15th chromosome, characterized by significant developmental delays and limited speech development.

Because of her own experiences and through conversations with other parents, she thinks the boards are of great help.

jung’s personal experience and conversations with other parents underscored the critical need for such communication aids, highlighting the positive impact they can have on children with communication challenges and their families.

Expanding the Initiative: Seeking Sponsors for future Boards

The social committee of Iserlohn is committed to expanding the communication board initiative to other playgrounds throughout the city. They are actively seeking sponsors to help fund the installation of additional boards. Interested parties can contact Petra Grieger at the Advisory Board for Inclusion at 02371 217-2011 or via email at inklusion@iserlohn.de.

The next communication board is already planned for the playground on the market square in the city center, with installation scheduled before the summer vacation. A sponsor has already been secured for this project, demonstrating the growing support for inclusive initiatives within the community.

The Broader Impact: Fostering a More Inclusive Community

The introduction of communication boards on Iserlohn’s playgrounds represents a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible community. By providing a simple yet effective tool for communication, the city is empowering children of all abilities to connect, play, and learn together. This initiative serves as a model for other communities seeking to break down communication barriers and foster a more welcoming environment for all.
