Ironheart” Series Inspires Young People in STEM

The upcoming “Ironheart” miniseries is generating excitement and inspiring young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Chanda Jefferson, the director of community engagement and outreach at the University of Pennsylvania’s school of engineering and Applied Science, believes the character Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, can have a significant impact.”Characters like her spark interest in STEM and help young people visualize themselves in those roles,” she said in an online interview. “While fictional, she plays a very real role in shaping aspirations and showing that STEM can be exciting, empowering, and inclusive.”

The first three episodes of the six-part “Ironheart” miniseries debut June 24, and Dominique thorne, the actress who plays Riri Williams, has been actively promoting the series and STEM education. She recently visited Spelman College and the Ron Clark academy in atlanta. An Instagram reel of Ms. Thorne at Ron Clark quickly went viral. During a dialog at Spelman, Ms. Thorne acknowledged the women who paved the way for her.

In the “Ironheart” miniseries, which takes place after the film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Riri WIlliams (Dominique Thorne) dons her high-tech Ironheart suit.

“I strongly believe that I only have this opportunity because of other women who look like me who stepped on screen, behind camera, when they weren’t expected to succeed,” said ms. Thorne. “Not only did they succeed, but they raised the standard of what should be expected…. Me playing this character really just feels like a continuation of that same work.”

From Shuri Audition to Ironheart Icon

Ms. Thorne initially auditioned for the role of Shuri in “Black Panther,” which ultimately went to Letitia Wright. Her audition included working with the late Chadwick Boseman.

“I strongly believe that I only have this opportunity because of other women who look like me who stepped on screen…”

The chemistry between Shuri and Riri in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was notable, with Ms. Thorne making a strong impression as the tech prodigy. The “Ironheart” series follows the events of “Wakanda Forever.” A promotional trailer shows Riri being challenged and then receiving an offer from Parker Robbins to build something “iconic.”

STEM, “Black girl Magic,” and representation

The series explores the intersection of STEM and “Black Girl Magic,” highlighting the resilience and beauty of Black individuals. Despite increased representation in media, disparities persist in STEM fields.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is addressing this gap through advocacy and research. Ryan Coogler, executive producer of “Ironheart,” has spoken about making the challenges of STEM students relatable. He explained in a Marvel.com interview, “I related to it personally. I’ve been that kid in a college dorm room in a town different from the town I came up in, trying to make a name for myself.”

Ms. Jefferson emphasizes the importance of helping young people connect with science. “Science isn’t just a subject. It’s a tool for students to understand the world and tackle real challenges in their communities,” she said. “When they see STEM that way, it becomes personal and a powerful part of their future.”
