The Suspicion Begins: Irish Leaders’ Concerns

Recent revelations from State Papers have shed light on the Irish government’s deep skepticism regarding the treatment of Billy Wright, leader of the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF). Many believed Wright was receiving preferential treatment, which could elevate his status within the prison.

Better known as ‘King Rat’, Wright was a prominent figure in the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) before breaking away to form the LVF after the group’s 1994 ceasefire. The LVF was notorious for its brutal tactics and the deaths of many Catholics.

Special Treatment and Its Consequences

In early 1997, Wright was incarcerated, and the British authorities acknowledged the LVF as a distinct loyalist paramilitary group, granting its members a separate wing in Maze Prison. The Irish government was alarmed by this decision, arguing it would bolster Wright’s confidence and attract other dissidents, thereby undermining the more moderate leadership within the prison.

Simultaneously, the British government was rejecting Ireland’s requests for concessions to the mainstream loyalist prisoners, aimed at reinforcing their ceasefire commitment.

The Charisma of Billy Wright

Brendan McAllister, a mediator, visited Wright in prison during the summer of 1997. He described Wright as articulate, intelligent, and charismatic, noting that he drew loyalty through personal appeal rather than fear.

McAllister emphasized the serious threat posed by the LVF, stating Wright’s followers combined leadership qualities, idealism, and a disciplined fighting force. He viewed Wright and his group as defenders of a lost unionist identity.

Punishment Backfired?

After the LVF prisoners set fire to their wing in July 1997, they were isolated in strict solitary confinement. The prison guards, armed with specialized equipment and communication methods, were tasked with maintaining security.

McAllister found Wright extremely angry about the harsh treatment, considering it an attempt to humiliate him. However, some, like Briege Gadd, head of the Northern Ireland Probation Board, believed the punishment might have strengthened, rather than weakened, the LVF.

Gadd suspected that some authorities were manipulating the situation to foster the LVF and provoke external support for its cause.

Official Response and Controversy

Eamon McKee, an Irish official, relayed Gadd’s concerns to Dublin, noting significant fears among other contacts regarding the LVF’s treatment.

British authorities countered the allegations by asserting that Wright’s life was in danger, a claim that would prove tragically true.

Billy Wright’s Tragic End

The LVF leader was indeed killed shortly after Christmas 1997 by Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) prisoners who had managed to smuggle a weapon into Maze Prison.

This incident echoes the complex and often contentious landscape of paramilitary activity in Northern Ireland during a tumultuous period of conflict and change.
