Irish Hospitals Struggle Underweight of Flu Hospitalizations, Urging Public to Use Alternative Health Services

Amid the post-Christmas period, acute hospitals in Ireland are facing unprecedented pressure as flu cases surge. According to the Health Service Executive (HSE), 742 individuals were hospitalized with influenza on Friday, nearing the upper end of projected figures that healthcare providers anticipated.

“Our acute hospitals have been working over Christmas. Senior clinical staff have been on site to ensure patients are discharged when possible and to maintain efficient patient flow through Emergency Departments,” explained Bernard Gloster, HSE Chief Executive. He added that although they had prepared for a surge in hospitalizations, current numbers slightly exceed their predictions.

Challenges in Emergency Departments

The spokesperson emphasized that Emergency Departments are always open to treat the most seriously ill patients, who receive priority treatment. However, patients with minor illnesses or symptoms may experience longer waiting times.

“We would urge the public to use alternative healthcare services for treatment such as GP, GP Out of Hours, emergency units, and pharmacies when appropriate,” Gloster stated. “If patients are very sick and in an emergency situation, they should, of course, go to their nearest Emergency Department.”

Alternative Healthcare Services

The HSE advises individuals with minor illnesses to seek care elsewhere to avoid unnecessary pressure on hospital resources. General practice (GP) expanded clinics, which run during the daytime, may offer a viable alternative. Patients should check if their GP office participates in this scheme.

The HSE also recommends utilizing pharmacies for common cold treatments. By following these guidelines, individuals can help the healthcare system manage patient flow more effectively.

Urgent Care Services

For non-emergency situations, out-of-hours GP services can provide high-quality medical care. It is advised that patients familiarize themselves with GP out-of-hours service hours, particularly during the holiday season.

Prevention Measures

To reduce the risk of hospitalization, vaccination remains a key preventive measure. Flu vaccines are available for everyone, while COVID-19 vaccinations target specific groups. Individuals can find tailored vaccine recommendations by:

Public Service Message

Health officials continue to urge residents to be vigilant about potential hospital visiting restrictions due to circulating infections. Compliance with infection prevention and control measures is essential for safeguarding public health.
