Iran This Sunday he appointed Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi nuevo Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corpsas reported by the Iranian Mehr agency.
In Argentina, his name is associated with the AMIA attack: they point it out as mastermindthere is a red alert from Interpol about him and the Government of Javier Milei requested his arrest in 2024. The United States also demands the capture of Vahidi, who in 2021 was appointed as Iran’s Minister of the Interior.
Vahidi replaces the general Mohamad Pakpurkilled in the US and Israeli attacks against Iran and confirmed by the Iranian regime.
In addition to the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Tehran has confirmed that the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Abdorrahim Mousavi, and the Iranian Minister of Defense, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, as well as the Secretary of the Defense Council, Ali Shamjani, have died in the attacks.
After Khamenei’s death, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, 66, was named this Sunday as the third member of the interim council that will lead Iran.
Arafi, a jurist of the Guardian Council, takes office alongside the President of Iran, Masud Pezeshkian, and the head of the Iranian Judiciary, Golamhosein Mohseni Eyei.
As Clarín reported last year, Vahidi has been among those wanted by Interpol since 2007, when the international police accepted an Argentine request to establish red alerts on former and current Persian officials accused of the 1994 Amia attack (85 dead).
In the investigation of prosecutor Alberto Nisman – whose death in January 2015 remains under investigation – it is established that he was commander of the al-Quds Forces, the international expeditionary brigade of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard, and that as such “he participated in the meeting in which it was decided to carry out the attack in Argentina” in 1994.
Furthermore, they claim that the Islamic Jihad of Lebanon’s Hezbollah was entrusted with its execution.
Vahidi and Moshen Rezai, says a 2017 Financial Information Unit report, were commanders of the Al-Quds Force and were part of the select group that “in the intelligence office submitted the proposal to attack our country for evaluation.”
The figure of Vahidi, born in 1958, reappeared in 2024 in the Argentine media when the prosecutor of the unit in which Nisman worked and that investigates the Amia case, Sebastián Basso, requested from Justice an international arrest warrant against the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, now assassinated by Israel and the United States. He did so following the request of Federal Criminal and Correctional Judge No. 6, Daniel Rafecas, for the trial “in absentia” against ten Iranians considered fugitives accused of perpetrating the terrorist attack against the Jewish mutual society.
For the UFI AMIA, the ten accused carried out the attack with their armed wing, the Shiite militia Hezbollah, with authorization, directives and financing from authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its embassy in Argentina.
Vahidi, in addition, curiously, was Minister of Defense when then-president Cristina Kirchner signed the Memorandum with Iran in 2013 to resolve the bilateral conflict over AMIA.
