UThe lead has fallen on the Iranian people. In the blood. Its uprising, triggered on December 28, 2025 by the dramatic fall of the national currency, was crushed in an unprecedented outbreak of violence. This is what the first testimonies collected with difficulty suggest. The results of this repression remain impossible to establish to this day, due to lack of access to the Internet, cut off as a preamble to the brutal repression, and obviously lack of the possibility for the press to do its work freely, but it promises to be terrible.
By thus breaking down a protest that the Iranian president himself, Massoud Pezeshkian, had initially deemed legitimate, the Iranian government has above all shown its weakness. It must be said that the protest movement, linked to increasingly dramatic living conditions, quickly identified those responsible: a regime ready to sacrifice the future of its people, embodied by a Guide, Ali Khamenei, who is leading them towards the abyss.
Iranians are best placed to judge the results of his disastrous choices. The obstinacy in acquiring nuclear weapons, seen as life insurance against any attack from outside, has produced an arsenal of international sanctions under which the economy is buckling, plunging the Iranians into poverty, despite the wealth that their country has. At the same time, this wealth remains monopolized by the caste organized around the regime, and in particular its security pillar, the elite corps of revolutionary guards, clearly on the front line in repression.
Irresponsible voices
The results are just as catastrophic outside. The axis of militias affiliated with Tehran, built at great expense, was reduced to tatters in 2024 and then in 2025 in waves of Israeli bombings. In Syria, the regime of Bashar Al-Assad, carried at arm’s length, collapsed in less than ten days, at the end of 2024. Iranian power is weakened like never before. The heavy silence, at the height of the protest, from its Russian and Chinese allies cruelly demonstrated this after the loss of another accomplice in repression, the Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, kidnapped by American special forces on the night of January 2 to 3.
Deprived of the ideological engine of its beginnings and the legitimacy that electoral deadlines under close control could provide, but which allowed an appearance of political breathing space, the Islamic Republic is running on empty, withdrawn into a minority which continues to support it out of interest. This is what the undoubtedly unprecedented brutality of the crushing of the popular uprising which gripped the country, all social classes combined, has just tragically demonstrated.
Faced with this state of advanced decomposition, too many irresponsible voices who had nothing to fear urged the Iranians to defy the machine gun. Without offering them anything other than empty promises. Donald Trump thus assured them that aid which remained indefinable was « en route »when the demonstrations had already stopped, before sending his thanks to the Iranian leaders for having, according to him, canceled the hangings of opponents.
This cynicism plays into the hands of the regime, especially when it is added to the expulsions of Iranian refugees in the United States in the name of hunting for immigrants. The twilight full of dangers into which Iranian power is sinking makes, on the contrary, and more than ever, solidarity with those who dare to challenge it.
