EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says she is ready to propose new sanctions against Iran.
“The EU has already imposed far-reaching sanctions against Iran – against those responsible for human rights violations, the expansion of the nuclear program and for Tehran’s support of Russia’s war in Ukraine. And I am ready to propose additional sanctions in response to the brutal repression of demonstrators,” she told Die Welt newspaper over the weekend.
According to information from the dpa, the initial focus is likely to be on punitive measures against those responsible for the violence against demonstrators – possibly also against ministers. EU entry bans and asset freezes could be issued against them.
Kallas said that citizens in Iran risked everything to be heard. “The regime has a long history of stifling protests and we are seeing a brutal response from security forces.”
