In a shift that could significantly expand the capabilities of apps on its devices, Apple is opening up its peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connectivity to third-party developers. This move breaks from the company’s traditional approach of reserving such features primarily for its own services like AirDrop and AirPlay.
The change is slated to arrive with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 via the Wi-Fi Aware framework. This framework, which developers can now access, functions similarly to Apple’s Wireless Direct Link technology that underpins AirDrop and AirPlay. Consequently, apps available on the App Store will be able to incorporate peer-to-peer connections as a fundamental feature.
The Benefits of Wi-Fi Aware
A peer-to-peer connection creates a direct communication channel between devices using Wi-Fi, offering an choice to traditional internet or access point-reliant connections. Wi-Fi Aware provides advantages over standards like Bluetooth,notably its higher data throughput,making it suitable for tasks such as large file transfers and high-resolution video streaming. Compatibility: Which Devices Get Wi-Fi Aware?
The Wi-Fi Aware framework will not be available on all iPhones and iPads compatible with the iOS 26 update. On the iPhone side, support extends from the iPhone 12 to the latest iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e models.
