IPhone Android Video Calls: RCS Update Explained

The industry organization GSMA has now finalized RCS Universal Profile 4.0, which introduces the Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC) feature. The feature makes it possible to start video calls directly from both individual and group chats, allow participants to connect after the fact and synchronize call history in the chat flow.

The ambition is to create a cross-platform video calling experience that works across different devices and networks. The update could eventually make it possible to make video calls between iPhone and Android directly in messaging apps, reports The Verge.

As of now, it is still unclear when the video calling feature might become a reality for users. Neither Apple nor Google have yet confirmed that they will implement the support in their apps.
