IPhone 13-Year Old Update: Why Now?

Apple released several updates on Monday, but they only brought minor bug fixes and support for the new AirTag.

However, there is an interesting exception: iOS 12.5.8 is also running. It’s not a typo, there really was an update for the main iOS version launched in September 2012. This system is the last to run for the 12 and 13 year old iPhone 5S and iPhone 6.

There are no new functions on board the update, and the glass interface of iOS 26 was not given to the almost museum mobiles either. The new system version served one purpose: so that functions such as iMessage or FaceTime could continue to work. In fact, even the activation of the devices depends on this update.

The original certificates required for the above would expire in January 2027, but the update postpones this deadline. For how long, it is not known – in any case, Apple stepped in just in time.

As MacRumors recalls, prior to this, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 were last updated in January 2023 – when security fixes were on board.

If you still use one of the above mobiles, you may want to press the update button to keep it usable in the future. For example, to be nostalgic.
