The Hawkeyes open the season with a decisive win in Ben McCollum‘s debut.
The Hawkeyes had six players in double-figures: Bennett Stirtz (19), Tavion Banks (17), Alvaro Folgueiras (11), Isaia Howard (10), Cam Manyawu (10) and Brendan Hausen (10).
It was a stellar offensive showing by the Hawkeyes, who shot 62% from the field and 47% from deep.
It was a tale of two halves for Iowa defensively. Robert Morris shot just 38% from the field and 9% from deep in the first half. But after the break, the Colonials shot 63% from the field and 77% from deep.
Though there is room for improvement defensively, Iowa’s brought energy on that end of the floor.
All in all, it was a successful opening day for the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes lead 49-26 in what was a very impressive first half. Bennett Stirtz, who has a game-high 15 points, has been sensational. The flow of the game has been a little bit choppy with 24 fouls combined between the two teams.
Iowa is shooting 64% from the field and 57% from three while holding Robert Morris to 38% from the field and 9% from deep. Robert Morris turned the ball over 13 times in the first half.
One of the few flaws of Iowa’s first half was its rebounding. Robert Morris holds a 18-13 advantage at the break.

Iowa’s starters vs. Robert Morris
Tyler Tachman
The first starting five of the Ben McCollum era is as follows: Bennett Stirtz, Isaia Howard, Cooper Koch, Tavion Banks and Cam Manyawu.
Not the starting lineup many expected.
Stirtz and Manyawu aren’t a surprise. Banks, who was last season’s Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, makes sense. But it’s interesting to see Koch and Howard both in the starting group. Koch is a redshirt freshman and one of two holdovers from last season’s roster. Howard is a sophomore and one of six Drake transfers.
That means no Alvaro Folgueiras in the starting lineup. He was a big transfer portal win for the Hawkeyes after being last season’s Horizon League Player of the Year. Also, sharpshooter Brendan Hausen will come off the bench. Hausen, who previously played for Villanova and Kansas State, is far and away Iowa’s most experienced player in a power conference program.
Interesting mix of five for Ben McCollum to start with. We’ll see how it pans out.

Iowa vs. Robert Morris prediction

Ben McCollum employs a much different style than what Iowa fans became accustomed to under Fran McCaffery. It might take some getting used to the fact that Iowa will likely be in more low-scoring rock fights. This game might not be the epitome of that, but with so much emphasis on defense, it should reveal signs of changed times under McCollum. On paper, this isn’t a game that Iowa should struggle with. But with so many wild cards, it’s difficult to know exactly what to expect. Either way, it would be shocking if Iowa didn’t come away victorious. Iowa 75, Robert Morris 58
