Ion Iliescu, the former President of Romania, was admitted to hospital for medical investigations, according to a statement. This follows a period of absence from public life since 2017.
Former President Ion Iliescu, 95, underwent medical investigations at the Emergency Clinical Hospital Prof. Dr. Agrippa Ionescu in Bucharest, according to a statement issued today.
The statement read: “In the afternoon of yesterday, 9.06. 2025, Ion Iliescu, former president of Romania, presented, at his request, at the Emergency Clinical Hospital Prof. Dr.Agrippa Ionescu in Bucharest for carrying out some investigations. Specialty, in parallel with the procedures for establishing the diagnosis.”
Iliescu has remained largely out of the public eye since march 2017. He last appeared at the General Prosecutor’s Office in connection with the 1989 Revolution file, where he faced accusations of crimes against humanity.
Last month, Ion Iliescu publicly congratulated Nicușor Dan on winning the presidential elections against George Simion.
Iliescu on Age and Politics
