Interstellar Object: ESA Confirms Potential Solar System Flyby

The property is probably ten to twenty kilometers tall. According to ESA, it is not a danger to the earth.

An interlocking object, A11pl3z, flies through the solar system. According to the ESA, however, it is not a danger to the earth and will pass near the Mars orbit. If it is interstellar, it would be the third of its kind.

In orbit of Mars

The property would “fly deep through the solar system and penetrate Mars’s orbit narrowly,” said Richard Moissl, head of the planetary defense department on Wednesday. If it is confirmed that the object does not come from the solar system, it would only be the third interstellar object that was ever found on the way. “We are not 100 percent safe at the moment, but anything else would be a surprise,” said Moissl. For the first time, astronomers discovered an interlocking object in the solar system in 2017, another was identified in 2019.

According to Moissl, it is currently assumed that the property is about ten to 20 kilometers wide, possibly smaller. “It will be brighter until the end of October, approach the sun and will then be recognizable with the telescope until next year.”

Investigation will probably not be possible

An investigation of the object will probably not be possible. It is “considerably faster” than the other two previously discovered interstellar objects, explained the Astronomer of the British University of Central Lancashire, Mark Norris. According to Norris, models out of up to 10,000 interstellar objects that are in the solar system at a certain point in time. These objects provided a rare insight into living conditions outside the solar system. If amino acids were discovered on them, this would be an indication of the possibility of life. (APA/AFP)
