Internet Services Suspended in Jamui Over Communal Tensions
Following a surge in communal tensions that escalated into violence on Sunday evening, internet services in Jamui district, Bihar, have been suspended for 72 hours. The move, taken preemptively by the state government, aims to curb the spread of rumors and stabilize the law-and-order situation.
Suspension Imposed Under Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act
The government, acting under Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, ordered a ban on internet services effective from Monday. This suspension will affect major platforms including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, WeChat, Google, Skype, Snapchat, Telegram, and YouTube.
As stated in the official notification by the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Bihar, “Some anti-social elements in Jamui may use the internet medium to transit objectionable content, with a view to incite people to commit various offences against communal harmony and cause damage to life and property, and disturb peace and tranquillity.”
Actions Taken by Law Enforcement
The decision to suspend internet services was made due to recent incidents of violence and the spread of misinformation. According to Munger Range DIG Rakesh Kumar, “Various social media platforms, YouTube channels, and so-called news portals are spreading rumors.” He added that the administration has lodged two separate FIRs based on statements from both communities involved.
Eight individuals have been arrested so far. The District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jamui have visited the affected areas and assessed the situation. Additional forces, along with magistrates, have been deployed to key locations, including Jhajha police station and Jamui town, to maintain peace.
Incident Details
The violence reportedly began on Sunday evening in Baliadih village, Jhajha, when a procession, led by the ABVP and Hindu Swabhiman Sangthan, was returning from a Hanuman temple. Anti-social elements allegedly attacked the procession with sticks, rods, and stones. More than six people were injured, and several vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, were damaged.
The injured individuals identified include Nitish Kumar Sao, Khusbu Pandey, Pintu Kumar, Madhavlal Kashyap, Suraj Barnwal, and others. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation to ensure justice for the victims and restore harmony in the community.
Community Impact and Precautionary Measures
While the suspension of internet services is a significant measure, it reflects the seriousness of the situation in Jamui. The government’s actions aim to prevent further escalation by curtailing the spread of misinformation and rumors.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of cooperation from the community in maintaining peace. Local leaders, along with law enforcement, are working tirelessly to address the root causes of communal tensions and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
