The MBTA just won $2.23 million in federal funding to improve safety on streets and buses in the region. The money comes from the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, which seeks to reduce serious accidents and deaths on the roads by supporting local safety projects.
What specifically will it be used for? The funds will allow the implementation of the Mobileye Shield+ project, a collision avoidance technology that will be installed on up to 160 MBTA buses. This system helps drivers detect pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles, especially in areas with blind spots.
