Instagram & Minors: Bans, Protections & Parental Alerts

The issue of banning social networks for minors is now at the center of political debate in Europe and the United States. Australia already introduced a ban on social media access for under 16s in December, while in France the National Assembly approved a bill banning the use of platforms by minors under 15. Even in Italy the debate is open, with legislative proposals that aim to restrict access to younger people.

These are drastic choices, which put the technological giants under pressure. The large platforms, to avoid generalized restrictions, are trying to strengthen internal protection tools, introducing new control and prevention systems.

The new Instagram feature

The latest news announced by Meta Platforms for Instagram fits into this context. The platform has launched a feature in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada that alerts parents when a teen repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm. The extension to other countries, including Italy, is expected within the year.

It is the first time that a social network has introduced a proactive notification system of this type. Until now, platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat had limited themselves to blocking certain searches or showing support resources, without directly involving families. Instagram notifications will arrive via email, text message, WhatsApp or via in-app alert, accompanied by guidelines on how to approach the dialogue with children.

Artificial intelligence and new responsibilities

The next step concerns artificial intelligence. Meta is also developing similar alert systems for interactions with Meta AI, so as to inform parents if children try to start conversations on sensitive topics.

In the United States, meanwhile, legal actions against AI companies are multiplying, accused of creating chatbots potentially harmful to young people. The extension of alerts to conversations with AI also represents, according to experts, a step consistent with the evolution of the digital habits of teenagers, who increasingly confide in virtual assistants.
