Federal authorities in puerto Rico are raising concerns about the increasing use of social media platforms by sexual predators to target and exploit minors. Rebecca González, director of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Puerto Rico, highlighted the disturbing trend, emphasizing how platforms like Instagram are being weaponized.
González explained that predators frequently enough initiate contact through direct messages (DMs), establishing relationships with victims through image exchanges and conversations. These interactions can then escalate to in-person meetings, frequently enough leading to intervention by law enforcement.

This surge mirrors national trends. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), reports of online enticement of children have increased dramatically in recent years, underscoring the urgent need for preventative measures and increased vigilance.
A Case Study: Daryana González Montañez and the Trafficking Scheme
González referenced a recent case involving Daryana González Montañez, who pleaded guilty to prostituting a 14-year-old relative. Montañez allegedly operated a scheme where she received payment for arranging sexual encounters between the minor and two men.
One of the men involved was arrested,while the other,Tomás Miguel Eustaquio,remains a fugitive. montañez faces severe penalties, including potential life imprisonment, for charges including sex trafficking, transporting a minor for criminal sexual activity, and producing child pornography.
Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of 19 to 24 years, but the gravity of the offenses could lead to a much longer term.
