Cultivating a Culture of Innovation in Forestry
In today’s rapidly evolving world, businesses across all sectors are recognizing the critical importance of continuous improvement and innovation. The Ferland-Boilleau forest cooperative is a prime example of how embracing these principles can lead to a significant competitive edge. By strategically integrating innovation into their corporate culture, the cooperative has not only streamlined operations but also positioned itself for long-term sustainability.
The Catalyst: A dedicated Continuous Improvement Coordinator
Recognizing the potential benefits of a structured approach to improvement, Éric Rousseau, the director general of the forest cooperative, championed the hiring of Josée-Anne Lévesque, a Lean Management specialist. Rousseau emphasized his conviction in the power of innovation, stating, I believe in it and I managed to persuade my board of directors of the benefits of engaging it.
Lévesque’s role spans the entire operation, from harvesting to sawing, and includes educating employees at all levels about continuous improvement methodologies.
Rousseau highlights the importance of having a dedicated resource for driving these initiatives. You can’t just entrust this to a director. It really takes someone who pilots, who will do the research on what is done… If we don’t have someone like that, we can solve problems, but we will not solve them fundamentally.
This dedicated focus allows for a more proactive and strategic approach to problem-solving and process optimization.
Embedding Innovation into the Cooperative’s DNA
One of the biggest hurdles, according to Rousseau, was integrating continuous improvement and innovation into the cooperative’s core values. While not yet fully realized, these principles are now deeply ingrained in the daily practices of the Ferland-Boilleau forest cooperative. To further support this, a second, more technically skilled individual was brought on board to work alongside Lévesque.
The cooperative has established a robust structure, featuring information hubs for each sector. These hubs function as dashboards, providing real-time insights into process performance. As Rousseau explains, We give ourselves objectives and, if they have not been achieved, we wonder why, until the problem solving.
This data-driven approach ensures accountability and facilitates targeted improvements.
When issues arise,a collaborative problem-solving process is initiated, bringing together workers, the relevant director, and the individual who identified the problem. This ensures that solutions are developed collectively and implemented efficiently. The files do not drag. When we have a problem, we send it right away.
Digital Transformation and Climate Change Adaptation
Lévesque is also spearheading the cooperative’s digital transformation efforts. A key project involves leveraging the starlink system to provide real-time connectivity in the forest. This allows for live data collection, improving predictability in material supply to the sawmills. It was a revolution for us. It is indeed at the heart of our projects. We even want to go further,
Rousseau notes.
Another initiative involves automating the tracking of hours worked on forest road machines through electronic chattering, replacing manual processes. Furthermore, the cooperative is actively adapting its practices to address the challenges of climate change. This is something that did not worry us so much two years ago, but with what we have known in recent years, such as forest fires, early spring or very rainy fall, we realized that our planning was not suitable,
says Rousseau. This proactive approach to climate resilience is crucial for the long-term viability of the cooperative.
The Competitive Advantage: Efficiency and Adaptability
The Ferland-Boilleau forest cooperative’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation has yielded tangible results, giving them a distinct advantage in the marketplace. It is clear that it gives us a competitive advantage. In terms of competitiveness, it is certain that we are more competitive,
Rousseau asserts. By embracing a culture of innovation and investing in digital transformation, the cooperative is well-positioned to thrive in an increasingly competitive and uncertain surroundings.
In an era marked by socioeconomic uncertainty, Rousseau emphasizes the importance of innovation and collective intelligence. You have to ask what are the uncertainties and what you can do to improve them.It brings us to think collectively about that… We can think together. It’s surprising.
This collaborative approach fosters creativity and ensures that the cooperative remains adaptable and resilient in the face of future challenges.
