[서울=뉴시스] Reporter Cha Mi-rye = After the sinking of a tourist boat carrying 11 people that occurred on the night of the 26th in the strait near Padar Island, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, rescue teams are searching for missing people and are continuing rescue operations for the coach of the Spanish soccer team and his three children, AP, Reuters, and CNN reported.
Padar Island is a small island located in Komodo National Park, northeast of Bali, Indonesia, and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In particular, Pink Beach is a famous tourist destination for its unique southern scenery and rough and beautiful wild scenery. .
Six family members, four crew members, and a tour guide were on board the boat that went on a sightseeing trip, but the vessel suffered an engine failure while traveling from Komodo Island to Padar Island, rescue chief Fatur Rahman of the Maumer Search and Rescue Team said at a press conference.
He said three of the people involved in the accident were soon rescued by a vessel passing by the scene, while the fourth was found and rescued by a search and rescue team.
Survivors included a mother and daughter tourists from Spain, while a father, two sons and a daughter were still missing, he said.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Valenciaga football club announced that Fernando Martin, the team’s women’s reserve team coach, and three of his children were killed in the accident.
Balenciaga issued a condolence note on its dedicated X account, saying local authorities had confirmed their deaths.
Real Madrid CF also expressed condolences on the death of 44-year-old coach Martin and his three children on its official account.
However, local rescue team leader Rahman announced that the rescue operation was only halted on the 27th due to bad weather and poor visibility and that the search was continuing again from early morning on the 28th.
“Our team is scouring the waters north of Padar Island. We will definitely find them,” he said.
Rahman said that survivors who have already been rescued are being sheltered at the dock office in Labuan Bajo City and provided with lodging and food due to waves over 2.5 meters high and poor communication at night.
Currently, the search operation is being carried out in the sea area within a 9km radius of the sinking accident site, mobilizing naval vessels, rescue units, diving equipment, rescue boats, and local fishermen and residents’ vessels.
Indonesia is a country comprised of over 17,000 coral reef islands, so ships are the most widely used means of transportation. Maritime accidents occur very frequently here due to lax safety regulations and overcrowding.
