Indonesia Expands Marine Conservation Efforts with Two New Zones
Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to marine protection by designating two new conservation areas. These zones, located in Bintan, Riau Islands, and Bitung, North Sulawesi, represent an important addition to the nation’s efforts in safeguarding its rich marine biodiversity.

The establishment of these two conservation areas is governed by Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministerial Decrees No. 87 and 88 of 2024. Bintan’s Conservation Area
The new conservation zone in Bintan covers an extensive 843,609.30 hectares and is divided into a core zone, a limited utilization zone, and a rehabilitation zone. This area is home to unique ecosystems, including vital habitats for sea turtles and numerous other marine species. The designation of this zone underscores the importance of protecting these fragile habitats to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine life in the region.
Bitung’s Conservation Area
The newly established conservation area in Bitung encompasses a total of 9,659.39 hectares and is structured into three distinct zones. Its primary goal is to preserve the health of the coral reef ecosystem and to promote responsible marine and maritime tourism practices. By safeguarding these coral reefs, the area aims to support both environmental and economic sustainability.
Management and Stakeholder Involvement
The management of these conservation areas will be overseen by local administrations, in accordance with the ministerial decrees. Firdaus Agung, Director of Marine Ecosystem and Biota Conservation, highlighted the positive impact this approach can have on ensuring effective conservation efforts while engaging various stakeholders in the preservation process.
Progress Towards National Targets
The addition of these two new conservation areas has significantly boosted Indonesia’s total marine conservation area, bringing it to more than 30 million hectares.
