Pakistani Prime Minister Acknowledges Indian missile Strikes
In a surprising public statement, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz sharif has acknowledged that Indian ballistic missiles struck targets within Pakistan, including the strategically vital Nur Khan Air Base, on May 10th. This admission marks a meaningful escalation in the already strained relationship between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Speaking at a recent ceremony in Islamabad, Prime Minister Sharif detailed a phone call he received at approximately 2:30 AM from the Chief of Army Staff, General Syed asim Munir, informing him of the indian missile strikes. On the night between may 9-10… General Asim Munir called me… and told me that India had launched its ballistic missile. One missile had landed at Nur Khan’s air base and several in other areas,
Sharif stated, as reported by various news outlets.
Operation Sindoor: India’s Response to Terrorist Attack
The indian strikes where reportedly conducted as part of “Operation Sindoor,” a military operation launched on May 7th. This operation was a direct response to a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in the Indian-administered Kashmir region, on April 22nd, wich resulted in the deaths of 26 Hindu tourists.Such attacks have historically fueled tensions between the two nations.
According to sources within the Indian government, Operation sindoor successfully neutralized approximately 100 terrorists
associated with militant groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. These groups have been implicated in numerous attacks against India in the past.
Strategic targets and Military Coordination
The Indian military operation involved a coordinated effort between the Indian air Force (IAF), the Indian Army, and the navy. The targets included key infrastructure and strategic military installations across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. These targets reportedly encompassed airfields, radar stations, and interaction centers at a minimum of 11 locations.
Among the initial targets hit in the early hours of may 10th were the Nur Khan Air Base (formerly Chaklala Air Base) and Sargodha. Subsequent satellite imagery has seemingly confirmed impacts in other locations, including jacobabad, Bholari, and Skardu. The Nur Khan Air Base, situated between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, holds significant strategic importance as a central hub for Pakistani air operations. It was also targeted during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, highlighting its continued strategic value.
Political Fallout and Regional Implications
The admission by Prime Minister Sharif has already sparked significant political reactions. Amit Malviya, a spokesperson for the bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India, shared a video of Sharif’s speech on social media platform X, stating that it shows the scale, accuracy, and courage
of the operation. this public acknowledgment and the subsequent political commentary underscore the heightened tensions and the potential for further escalation.
The recent events raise serious concerns about regional stability.According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), both India and Pakistan continue to develop and expand their nuclear arsenals. The current situation highlights the urgent need for diplomatic engagement and de-escalation measures to prevent further conflict and maintain peace in the region.
