Search and recovery teams have been working for a third day at the site of the recent aviation disaster in India, where an Air India flight crashed, resulting in at least 270 fatalities, according to officials in Gujarat state.
The London-bound Boeing 787 crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday, striking a medical college hostel in a residential area of Ahmedabad. The crash killed 241 people on board and at least 29 on the ground. One passenger survived the incident.
Recovery teams continued their work until late Friday, discovering at least 25 more bodies within the wreckage, authorities reported.
according to Dr.Dhaval gameti from the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, the facility has received 270 bodies. the sole surviving passenger remains under observation for their injuries. “He is doing very well and will be ready to be discharged anytime soon,” said Gameti on Saturday.
Hundreds of relatives of the crash victims have provided DNA samples at the hospital to aid in identifying the deceased, as many bodies were severely burned or mutilated.
Some relatives voiced their concerns on Saturday about the length of the identification process. Authorities stated that DNA matching typically takes up to 72 hours but that they are working to expedite the process.
“Where are my children? Did you recover them?” asked Rafiq Abdullah, who lost his nephew, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren in the crash. “I will have to ask questions. Government is not answering these questions.” Another relative repeatedly asked hospital staff when his relative’s body would be released for last rites. “Give us the body,” the relative pleaded.
Investigation and Response
“He is doing very well and will be ready to be discharged anytime soon,”
In addition to the formal investigation, the Indian government has established a high-level, multi-disciplinary committee to investigate the causes of the crash.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the committee will concentrate on developing procedures to prevent and manage aircraft emergencies in the future. It “will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organizations.”
Indian Minister of Civil Aviation Ram mohan naidu Kinjarapu announced in New Delhi that authorities have begun inspecting Air India’s entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Kinjarapu made this announcement at his first news briefing as Thursday’s crash.
Kinjarapu stated that eight of the 34 Dreamliner aircraft in India have already been inspected and that the remaining aircraft will be examined with “immediate urgency.” The government is awaiting the results of the crash investigation by the Aircraft accident Investigation Bureau and will take all necessary steps without hesitation, Kinjarapu added.
The plane’s digital flight data recorder, or black box, was recovered from a rooftop near the crash site on Friday. Investigators believe it will provide crucial details about the cause of the accident.
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has commenced working with “full force” to extract the data from the device.
Paul Fromme, a mechanical engineer with the U.K.-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers, stated that the device is expected to reveal information about the engine and control settings, while the voice recorder will provide cockpit conversations.
Jeff Guzzetti, an aviation safety consultant and former crash investigator for both the U.S.National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Management, said that investigators should be able to answer some key questions about the cause of the crash as early as next week, provided the flight data recorder is in good condition.
Guzzetti noted that investigators are likely examining whether wing flaps were set correctly, if the engine lost power, whether alarms were triggered in the cockpit, and if the plane’s crew accurately recorded data regarding the outside temperature and the weight of the fuel and passengers. He added that errors in the data could led to incorrect wing flap settings.
The Air India crash involved a 12-year-old Boeing 787. Boeing aircraft have faced safety concerns on other models.
