India Celebrates 76th Republic Day Abroad: Enthusiastic Events in Shanghai and Kathmandu

On January 26, 2025, India’s 76th Republic Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Consulate General of India in Shanghai and the Embassy of India in Kathmandu. These events brought together members of the Indian diaspora, friends of India, and local communities in China and Nepal.

Celebrations in Shanghai

The festivities in Shanghai kicked off with the unfurling of the Indian National Flag and the rendition of the national anthem. Children from the Indian community performed patriotic songs and dances that highlighted India’s unity and diversity.

Conducted at the Chancery premises in Shanghai, the celebration was characterized by its high level of enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. Pratik Mathur, the Consul General, officiated at the event. His address to the gathered crowd included reading out President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the nation.

Overwhelming participation was noted from members of the Indian community in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, underscoring the collective pride in India’s democratic journey.

Celebrations in Kathmandu

In Kathmandu, the celebrations began with the unfurling of India’s national flag by the Ambassador of India to Nepal, Parvinder Singh. The Ambassador conveyed his greetings to the members of the Indian diaspora and played a telecast of the President’s address.

A significant part of the Kathmandu celebrations included the honor bestowed upon the widows and next of kin of deceased soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces. The Embassy disbursed financial support worth NRs 28.29 crore, covering benefits under the Army Group Insurance program and extended insurance benefits.

The Embassy also unveiled the Bhu Puu – 2025 magazine, a compendium of welfare initiatives for ex-servicemen domiciled in Nepal.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu donated books amounting to NRs 23.5 lakh to 29 educational institutions across six provinces in Nepal, addressing the educational needs of students in remote areas.

Highlighting Achievements and Cultural Exchange

The Embassy felicitated the top 50 scorers from Nepal in the Bharat Ko Janiye (BKJ) Quiz, which ran from November to December 2024. This quiz aimed to deepen the foreign nationals’ and Indian community members’ understanding of India. The prize included an invitation to a two-week BKJ Yatra to India for the top 30 winners globally.

A video also played at the event, showcasing the progress made in India-Nepal relations over recent years. Cultural performances by students from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu, marked the occasion.
