Empowering Residents Through Education and Practical Application
incheon’s Jung-gu district has successfully concluded its inaugural “Knowing Hypertension and Diabetes” program, designed to equip residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage and prevent these prevalent conditions. The program, held over five sessions, engaged 25 residents of Yeongjong International City in a comprehensive learning experience.

A Multifaceted Approach to Health Education
The program adopted a holistic approach, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. Each session was carefully curated to address different aspects of cardiovascular health, hypertension, and diabetes management.

The curriculum included:
- Pharmaceutical Guidance: Pharmacists provided essential education on cardiovascular disease basics and proper medication adherence.
- Nutritional Wisdom: A nutritionist shared insights on balanced diets and healthy eating habits, crucial for managing blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
- Culinary Creation: Participants actively engaged in preparing a “Cranberry Protein Sandwich,” reinforcing healthy eating principles through hands-on experience.
- Stress Management: A “Stress Tapa laughter treatment” session highlighted the importance of mental well-being in overall health.
- Physical Activity: “Silver Yoga” sessions promoted gentle exercise to improve cardiovascular health and flexibility.

Building on Success
Encouraged by the positive reception, the International Urban Health Division is planning a second iteration of the program in the latter half of the year. This next phase aims to build upon the successes of the first program and deliver even more impactful health services to the community. This proactive approach aligns with growing global emphasis on preventative healthcare. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for strengthening primary healthcare systems to effectively manage noncommunicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes, which are responsible for 74% of global deaths.
A Vision for a Healthier Community
Jung Han-sook, director of the Jung-gu Health Center, emphasized the program’s focus on instilling healthy lifestyle habits to prevent chronic diseases. This initiative reflects a commitment to proactive healthcare and community well-being.
